I had a really interesting conversation with a member the other day.
They were expressing how they have never really believed in themselves.
And they asked about my own belief in myself.
Initially, I said what I thought was the case.
That I generally have always believed in myself.
That, if I’m willing to do the work, I could achieve most things.
I went away and had a little think about this conversation
And realised what I’d said wasn’t actually true.
I don’t have belief in myself.
I have belief in everyone.
I don’t believe that I’m any more capable of achieving the things that I want to than anyone else is.
My expectations in that area and no different than I have for friends, family members or members at RISE.
I believe that everyone, if they stick with things, can overcome roadblocks and make forward progress.
Sure person to person variations may make a difference in the speed of progress and just how far we can get……….
I know that, no matter how hard I train, I could never run 100m in under 10 seconds………
But that doesn’t mean I couldn’t get an awful lot faster than I am.
So, maybe, what we need is not more belief in our self…….
But to remove ourselves from that equation somewhat………
Decide if a thing is possible and how much and what kind of effort will go into it………
And, if we’re willing to do that for the benefits, to just then do that irrespective of how we feel about ourselves.
