———————-
The other week I was on holiday in the south of France with my family.
We’d hired a car for the week.
When I went to pick it up the women behind the counter kept trying to up sell me to a bigger one with extra fixtures.
Automatic, built in Sat Nav, etc.
She looked quite annoyed when I said I was ok.
And I found out why when I got to the car.
They’d already given me the better car and she just wanted to get the extra commission for the upgrade.
The car we had had an ‘Eco’ option on the main menu.
When I looked I found it constantly assessed your driving and gave you a score out of 5 stars for ‘Anticipation’ and ‘Acceleration’ and an overall score out of 100.
I’ve never driven so smoothly and economically a I did that week.
If could maintain it at 5 / 5 stars and about 97 to 98 most of the time.
The attached picture shows the 100 I got driving to the supermarket and back as the kids cheered me on.
It was just a bit of fun but it was quite satisfying to see that good score.
Imagine the system had just given me the score when I handed the car in after a week.
Would I have driven as well?
Maybe a bit better than normal, but I doubt I’d have got over 90.
It was that instant feedback that was key.
Some sort or recognition of my efforts in the here and now rather than in the there and then.
Seeing how every decision impacted the result straight away.
And that’s the problem with a lot of the goals we work towards.
The ‘result’ is too far in the future.
When we want to weigh three stone less, that’s so far away that it’s hard to keep motivated by the daily not being there.
Sure, we can track the pounds and ounces along the way.
But that can be demotivating.
The progress can feel too slow.
The hourly and daily fluctuations in weight can mask the forward progress.
If we can find a way to give ourselves the equivalent to that ‘instant feedback’ that can be a huge help.
We can aim to do a certain number of workouts per week.
Or a certain number of days in a calorie deficit.
And tick them off essentially.
Track them via an app perhaps.
Our app and website gives our members ‘points’ for doing the various things that will get them results.
Gamifying the whole process.
Receiving those points and the accompanying new levels and recognition in the Facebook group can those daily wins and instant feedback that make the things happen that lead to the overall goal over time.
And to new habits being formed.
Ultimately, there’s no wrong or right.
But if the ‘full marks’ are too far in the future to be sufficiently motivating………….
Then find a way to score points along the way.
Make that feedback more instant.
Much love,
Jon ‘s and Spencer’ Hall and Matt ‘Karl’ Nicholson
P.S. As has happened for 56 months in a row now, the programme sold out last night ready for September. Details for the next find out more meeting, for the October programme, are up now at myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting 🙂
