I was chatting to my niece the other day.
I have only one niece, but six nephews.
So, as I occasionally tell her, she’s both “my favourite niece but also my least favourite”.
She’d been looking through some old photo albums and found a picture of what is now her bedroom in the mid 90s when it was my mum’s home office.
It has made her realise that her room could be, shall we say, “somewhat tidier”.
She was running through some ideas on how she’d like to rearrange her room to help her keep it tidy.
“I just hate tidying up” she said.
“Then why create more tidying?” I replied.
“If you get this at your age, than you’ll have beaten me by many years” I continued.
“But, I eventually came to the realisation that putting stuff back in the right place often takes little to no more effort than putting it in the wrong place”.
“And that putting it in the wrong place creates much more effort overall”.
“It’s one second longer to put a piece of clothing in the right drawer than it is on the floor”.
“You won’t even notice the difference”
“But after a few days of saving a few seconds here and there, you’ve created a ten minute job”
It’s the same with many things.
If all six of us put our stuff straight in the dishwasher, rather than by the sink, it takes us all a couple of seconds more………..
But saves one of us (me) a bigger job in filling the dishwasher.
In many cases (not all, sure), being untidy is a massive false economy.
Creates more work than it solves.
And realising that is powerful.
Making the quick, easy adjustments as we go can be easier than the bigger fixes later on in many areas of life.
Making a few different food choices here and there……….
And going for portion sizes more inline with our requirements……….
Can take little to no time in places.
And save the massive effort that can come with having to lose the weight gained.
Getting fit again is so much harder than maintaining fitness.
And so on.
Some decisions in life do take more time and effort.
Many that we think do, don’t.
Or, if they do, it’s marginal.
And it can be a false economy.
More time and effort created than saved.
Worth remembering……….
Much love,
Jon ‘Probably retconning how tidy I was as a teenager’ Hall
P.S. If you’ve struggled with making massive, wholesale changes to your life before (and who hasn’t?), then let’s look at easier to make changes that actually add up over time to much better results. Exactly what we do. www.myrise.co.uk/apply for more info.
