If you’ve read these blogs for any length of time, you’ll know that we recommend tracking our food accurately for a few days in order to start to make changes to our eating.

We know it’s a bit of a faff.

Probably less of faff than we tell ourselves.

But a faff nonetheless.

We know people don’t always like doing it.

They tell us from time to time.

We sometimes get people mention it as part of their reason for leaving.

Telling us they’re going to try something else that’s “simpler” or “easier”.

Usually something where they’ll be told exactly what to eat.

“Given a meal plan”.

Which we know sounds appealing.

Like it sounded appealing the other few dozen times we tried it.

And it worked for a week or two at most.

Until it didn’t.

Someone else was feeding us.

We didn’t like the recipe.

We were in a rush.

We didn’t have all the ingredients.

We were eating out.

We went “off plan”.

And before we knew it, we were a few weeks back into our old way of eating.

We like the idea of being told what to eat.

“Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it” we say.

Even though that hasn’t worked before.

And we like the idea of instructions.

“Cut out carbs”.

“Don’t eat after 6”.

“Stop snacking”.

Even though those things won’t automatically work (if weight loss is our target).

What’s happening when we try something that doesn’t involve a level of precision…………

Is we’re asking someone to guess for us.

Imagine going to them and saying “I want to lose weight. Could you just guess what will do that and I’ll try and do it”?

That’s what we’re, essentially, doing if we go to someone and just get told what to do with no looking at what we’re currently doing, our preferences, logistics and so on.

Again, we completely understand that getting a bit more precision is a faff.

Stopping it being a guess is a faff.

But it’s the highest return on investment faff there is.

A few minutes, a few times a day of mild discomfort………….

For the results it brings………….

Is a huge ROI.

Much love,

Jon ‘Jeans’ Hall

P.S. Tomorrow’s blog will be the last one.
