I was chatting to one of the mums at the school gates the other day about child related logistics.
She asked what we were up to after school.
After school on a Friday now the four kids all have an activity.
Boxing, trampolining, swimming and football respectively.
I couldn’t quite remember the right order so I got my phone out to check.
The timings for these actually just about work out for one parent to do.
It’s two repeating loops around Macclesfield and Alderley to drop off and then pick up.
There’s no time for delays, like.
But it’s doable.
As she glanced at my calendar on my phone, she said in open mouthed amazement………
“Is that everything you’ve got on this week?”
It wasn’t.
The calendar was in day view.
And was full of several dozen “appointments”.
Now some of those things are 30 second jobs.
A message to send, an update to the website, a video to set up loading, etc.
Stuff that we might be tempted just to remember to do.
That I know that, by trying to remember, I’m more likely to forget.
Everything I do on a daily and weekly basis goes in my calendar.
Some of it’s on repeat.
Some of it I manually add at the start of the week or day.
Some of it’s automatically added by the project management software that I use.
But, if experience has taught me anything, it’s that I get way more done by having a specific plan of when it’s going to happen.
And we’re all the same in that respect.
I don’t expect everyone calendars to look like mine, of course.
I know I have a particularly logistically challenging life.
But if we’re consistently not getting done the things that we intend to do………
And at no point have we scheduled when we’re going to do them………
Then some way of scheduling them will benefit us.
The schedule can change, sure.
Things might get moved.
They just might not happen.
But, I’m willing to wager, that they are considerably more likely to happen if they get scheduled at some point.
Much love,
Jon ‘Shocking. Positively shocking’ Hall
P.S. Scheduling with accountability is a powerful combo. One of the reasons our members do so well. Even at a time of year like this. Check www.myrise.co.uk/apply to find out more about that!
