As I’ve mentioned recently, I’m away on holiday at the moment with the family. All the blogs that are coming out at the moment were scheduled before we went away. I’m actually writing this one on Thursday the 25th of July. I’ve just dropped youngest son at tennis camp, walked the dog and returned to do some work. As I pulled in, the bin lorry was a couple of doors down. And I realised that I didn’t put the black bin out last night. I normally put it out when I return from the school run with my two older sons. I always get the boys back on a Wednesday afternoon, so returning with them is very much my ‘cue’ to put the bins out. Because all habits have a cue. And over the next few days, I’m going to break down the other constituent parts of what’s called “the habit loop”. Because often we try and create or change a habit just by planning on “doing it”. And that level of plan will usually be as effective as it was previously. Understanding the sections of the habit loop and how to approach habit creation or change with a view to maximising that success………. Well…….. maximises the chance of success. All I want from today’s blog is for you to remember what the four parts of the habit loop are. Because if you can’t even remember that, you’re not going to do anything with this. If I bumped into you tomorrow or next week and said “Hey – what are the four parts of a habit loop?” I’d like for you to be able to recite them immediately. So, here we go; – Cue – Craving – Response – Reward Say it with me; Cue – Craving – Response – Reward Actually consciously run through those words in your head. If you can’t recall them in five minutes, let alone five days, then reading this far was a complete waste of time. – Cue – Craving – Response – Reward Cue – Craving – Response – Reward Have you got that? Maybe one more time? – Cue – Craving – Response – Reward Cue – Craving – Response – Reward If you can remember that and then read the next four blogs, you stand a pretty good chance of remembering how to approach habit creation and change with a view to it actually happening. Much love, Jon ‘I was afraid you’d miss me……. Dont worry, we won’t’ Hall P.S. There’s at least one blog reader who will definitely get that middle name. P.P.S.
