I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that I use the software Zapier to do a lot of what was once manual tasks.

It’s just the donkey work, if you will, of a lot of what I do.

Things that would otherwise be me dragging and dropping and clicking and copying and pasting and the like.

All the content and what it says is 100% me.

Who different things goes to is entirely my decision.

Whilst there is a level of automation in there, It’s just to deliver the exact same thing to people that I would do if I followed all the manual steps, but in an easier way for me.

Me doing all manual steps for everything would just mean I had less time (and focus and enthusiasm) to create and deliver the stuff that only I can create and deliver.

It would not only be pointless but it would mean that I did a less good job in helping people change their lives.

Automation helps me do a better job of helping you, not a worse one.

But, I think we’ve all been soured to automation when it’s been done badly.

We all receive things from businesses that clearly had no human input at all and we found super easy to ignore.

And it’s easy to allow that to bleed into ignoring other things where automation is, at most, just part of the process.

It’s a semi-regular occurrence that, after repeatedly chasing up people who aren’t getting back to me, they respond with “I thought it was just automated”.

And, whilst some of the messages I’ve sent, might have been sent in bulk or have involved some element of removing manual steps………

They were still exactly the same message that I would have sent if I typed them all out one by one.

They still came from a phone number, WhatsApp or email address that is mine and mine alone.

And nearly always we’ve previously had exchanges of messages that I clearly manually wrote for them, that they can see directly above the message(s) that they are ignoring.

Sometimes people have ignored phone calls as well.

Voicemails in which I say their name.

Maybe video messages that I’ve recorded specifically for them in which I also say their name.

Things that clearly, clearly, clearly are not automated in any way, shape or form.

But those people have chosen to use the justification of switching off to things because “it was automated”.

Because the human brain is very good at finding a justification for our behaviour that absolves us of responsibility.

One of the most powerful things that we can ever do is to take full responsibility for all our decisions.

Not blame.

Not shame.

No beating ourselves up over them.

But just accepting that nearly everything in our life is the direct result of the decisions that.

Other people’s actions and behaviours may influence the decisions that we then make.

But they don’t make them automatic.

We still choose to respond to a message or not.

We still choose what we eat or not.

We still choose whether we exercise or not.

We still choose how much water, caffeine and alcohol we drink.

Doesn’t mean those decisions are always easy.

But accepting that they are ours and ours alone………..

And removing justifications of our choices that pass the buck elswehre……..

Is powerful.

And, I can guarantee, will help you make better decisions overall and move in a direction that future you will thank you for.
