The last few years have been really hard for the Fitness Industry.

I fully appreciate they’ve been hard for most people, but our industry was particularly hit.

For half of 18 months we weren’t able to see people in person (I never used the word “closed”, we were “purely online”).

For the other half, we were operating under limited capacity when there was no ‘slack’ built into that in the first place.

Even now, many don’t feel quite ready to re-enter gyms and facilities like ours.

I’m super happy with how we navigated it.

But it’s still created a ‘hole in the budget’ that will probably take a good few years to fill.

Many haven’t made it at all.

Many fitness facilities didn’t reopen.

Or did, only to close again when people “didn’t come flooding back”.

Which is, of course, very sad.

Some of my friends went that way.

But, it’s probably worth observing that, in each case I’ve seen of somewhere that’s closed…………..

They did little to no advertising or marketing in order to rebuild membership numbers.

From those that I’ve spoken to, most felt they had “tried” at some point “but nothing worked”.

When we talked about what they’d done it was normally a handful of organic social media posts.

A paid ad or two.

Maybe a flyer drop.

Over a number of years.

When it hadn’t got amazing results immediately they, kinda, just stopped doing it.

Got quickly demotivated with it.

The results weren’t fast enough.

I’ve had ads running for RISE for a decade straight now.

If I hadn’t, we’d have been long gone too.

Some have worked brilliantly.

Some not so much.

But, overall, the approach has produced a positive return on investment.

If I’d stopped completely each time the results weren’t coming as quickly as I’d liked, you wouldn’t be reading this blog right now.

The irony, of course, is that many FitPros take the same approach to advertising that they get frustrated by when their clients do it.

When people just kinda stop because they weight isn’t coming off as fast as they’d like.

When it just seems like an expense (of time, effort and money).

Stopping and starting.

Jumping from one approach to another.

Not giving it enough time to make progress.

Not “trusting in the process”.

I’ve never met a FitPro that advertises all year round that isn’t doing, at least, ok.

And I’ve never met anyone who’s eaten in an average calorie deficit for a sustained period of time who hasn’t lost weight.

And controlled studies have yet to find that person either.

I get that it can be tempting to do the equivalent of ‘switch the ads off’ when the progress isn’t what you’d like.

But, if you’re doing the right things (and I’ll cover that tomorrow), then the results will come.

Worst case scenario, it might take longer than we’d, ideally, like.

But, short of dying, we’re getting to six or 18 months down the line either way.

We can either have trusted in the process and kept with it and got the results we desire.

Or not.

No time ‘saved’ either way.

Much love,

Jon ‘Ad(no)Sense’ Hall
