I’ll be honest, I don’t actually say this one.

“I want doesn’t get”.

I have my own version.

One of the kids says “I want XYZ”………..

Or they point out some sort of problem…………

I just stare at them.

They’ve not asked a question you see.

I don’t do anything until they do.

“Could I have……..?”

“Would you……..?”

“Can you help me with this?”

Followed by me saying “Ask me nicely and I’ll do most things for you. Just complain or point out a problem and I definitely won’t”.

They’ve actually got pretty good at just asking first time to be honest.

It’s taken some ‘training’ out of them though.

It’s human nature to just point out what we want.

In some areas, that is.

In others, we haven’t a clue.

Particularly as we get older.

We get bogged down in what we “don’t want”.

“I don’t want to feel like this”.

“I don’t want to look like this”.

“I don’t want to be this fat”.

But we don’t really know how we “do” want to be.

Maybe we have a weight we used to be in mind, at most.

But we struggle to know how we actually do want to “feel” particularly.

And, therefore, we struggle to figure out how to get there.

How to track progress.

How to accurately see what is or isn’t working.

How to build momentum.

Instead it just “feels” like it isn’t working.

Because it “feels” like we’re still “feeling like that”.

It’s why we usually find exercise related goals ‘easier’.

We can see measurable progress.

And, to a degree, that’s built into the process.

The workouts.

We see that we can do “more”.

Further, faster, heavier, etc.

How we “feel” can be harder to quantify.

But we can.

It can be as simple as a daily “How do I feel on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the worst I’ve ever felt and 10 the best?”

Re-test every day or two whilst making some adjustments (exercise, food, drink, sleep or whatever).

See what changes occur.

If it’s working, you’ll create enthusiasm to keep going.

Momentum.

If it’s not, you can tweak your approach.

But if all we ever think is “I don’t want to feel like this” that probably won’t change (at least not as much as it could).

Much love,
