I mentioned many times the contents of these blogs is sometimes inspired by the conversations I have with people.

Sometimes I’ll have similar conversations several times in a day or week.

And I know that if one or five people are thinking a certain way or struggling with a certain thing………

Then they’ll be dozens or more others in the same position.

The other day several people said to me some variant of the title to this blog.

“I want to get back in shape”

Which got me thinking.

How motivating is going back to somewhere that you’ve already been?

If it was that great, would we have left there in the first place?

We might think that we didn’t choose to leave there.

But it’s a powerful realisation to accept that we did.

We made choices related to our eating an activity levels that meant that we left that place.

Sure, they were external factors that made some decisions harder or easier.

But we chose to leave.

So is getting back there going to be something that motivates us enough?

Maybe.

Possibly not.

So, where could we go instead?

What destination will inspire and enthuse enough to do what needs to be done?

It might even be the same kind of results but just framed in a way that means something more to us.

If looking good on the beach sounds nice in theory but doesn’t really ‘juice’ us enough to do what needs to be done………..

Might we be more motivated by having more energy, patience and mental capacity to be a better partner, parent, friend, worker, boss, business owner, etc?

Might we set a target that feels somewhat beyond us in some ways?

There’s a school of thought that if we know how to do something, it’s already too boring for us to do it.

Might something a little bit more challenging and adventurous give us that enthusiasm to get started and course correct along the way?

Maybe, like an annoying child, we just keep asking “why?”.

Why we want to do something.

Until we get deep enough that it is something that will motivate us more than just “getting back in shape”.

No right or wrong, of course.

But if that place you’re thinking of getting back to before was so great, would you have left?

And is there somewhere else you can aim to get to that you will have the motivation for?
