If there’s one thing I’m fiercely protective of, it’s my energy levels.

Too many people rely on me having energy to allow them to dip too much.

My wife.

My kids.

You!

My energy fluctuates up and down, like everyone’s.

But it’s normally pretty good.

Maybe 7 to 9 out of 10 most of the time.

Over the years I’ve had a lot of people say to me some variation of;

“I wish I had your energy levels”

And the short answer is “You don’t”.

Not because it’s a bad thing or there’s some unexpected side effects.

It’s the second word.

“Wish”.

Defined in the dictionary as;

“feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that cannot or probably will not happen”

Anytime we’re wishing for something, it’s probably not going to happen.

We’ve framed it in our head in such a way that our actions and our reality then conform to that.

If it’s something we “want” that starts a different conversation in our heads.

Like anything else we want in life, we break down how to get it.

Want a new tele?

We need to make sure we have enough ‘spare’ cash to be able to afford it?

Want a promotion?

We clarify with work what we need to do to get that.

We don’t wish for it.

Do nothing and just kinda hope it’ll happen.

If we want more energy then our steps might lie in some combination of:

– More sleep

– Better eating

– Exercise

– Working on how we think about and interact with other people – one of our biggest energy drains if we let it be and, I’ll be honest, the thing I have gained the most benefit from

If we want to lose 20lbs, they’ll be steps for that.

Same for anything.

Wishing will never make it so.

Much love,
