I mentioned yesterday that people often comment on our posts about member successes with some variation of “What’s your secret?”
————– It’s the first find out more meeting for new members in four months next Tuesday –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting ———
Another common comment is “I wish I had your willpower”.
Or maybe “motivation”.
Which we get.
Because willpower is what we’re commonly told we need.
What we’re ‘lacking’.
By oursleves.
By others.
By what we read and watch.
But…………..
The problem arises when we realise………….
That if it means we need willpower…………..
We don’t want to do it!
Ultimately, willpower is a finite resource.
It runs out.
We can force ourselves to do stuff we don’t want to for a while.
But it soon becomes a pain.
We miss the odd time.
And, before we know it, it’s been weeks then months.
And we plan to ‘get back to it’ at some point.
We don’t need willpower for stuff we want to do, do we?
We don’t need it to watch our favourite programmes.
Do stuff we enjoy with people we like spending times with.
If we miss a time or two because of unavoidable circumstances, we don’t stop for months on end.
We do it next time we can.
Catch up where possible.
So, what’s the answer?
Whilst we can’t change the ‘what’ that needs to be done.
We can change the way we chose to view it.
We can tie it into what we value.
And how it helps those things that are truly important to us.
It can go from being “on a diet”…………..
To “eating well as it gives me the energy to look after the kids / be productive at work / do all the stuff I want to”.
Or from “got to to some exercise as I ate and drank too much at the weekend”……………
To “Going for my session as I’ll see people I like seeing, have a fun with them, improve my mood and have more energy”.
Or from “I have to cut out all my favourite foods”…………….
To “I get to try lots of exciting, tasty, new recipes”.
If it requires willpower, it’s probably not going to happen.
If it was, it would’ve by now.
If we change the way we see it to something we want to do (to some degree at least) because of what it brings to us……………….
Willpower isn’t needed 🙂
Much love,
