Albert Einstein once said “Insanity is doing the same thing again and expecting different results”.

A shorter, more punchy version of this is “If nothing changes, nothing changes”.

This is a phrase I find myself saying a lot, to people I talk to who are looking to lose weight and improve their health and fitness.

Whether they be one-to-one personal training clients, members of our group personal training, friends, family, people I meet, I often use this phrase: “If nothing changes, nothing changes”.

It’s usually used in response to people telling me that they intend to do the same thing again that they’ve done before, that hasn’t achieved results.

They tend to go back to doing the gym, to a slimming club, to just try and to eat less, to going on a diet, etc. etc.

However, they’ve invariably tried this thing before, at least once, sometimes five, ten, or twenty or more times.

I often ask them what they expect to be different this time.

It doesn’t mean what they’re trying to do won’t work, it means it hasn’t worked for them.

It’s not the right approach for them.

That it is in no way a bad reflection on that person.

The saying “different strokes for different folks” applies here.

Some things will work for some people but not for others.

However, chances are if something hasn’t worked for someone before, it won’t work again the next time.

So, if you find yourself any point thinking you might retry something that has not worked for you long-term in the past.

If you’re thinking you’ll go back to the gym, to the slimming club, to the diet etc. etc.

Remind yourself that “if nothing changes, nothing changes”.

We’re not even saying that you have to come and see us.

We’re just suggesting that you have to try something new.
