You remember when your granny (other elderly relatives are available) used to say that?

Or that if you swallowed chewing gum, it would wrap around our heart?

And, probably tonnes of other ‘old wives’ tales’ (or whatever the modern version of that phrase is).

Make no sense, really do they.

Like a lot of the stuff you hear about health and fitness.

Don’t bend your knees past ninety degrees on squats?

If they’re injured, maybe not to start with.

But building up strength and range of motion over time on joint that’s clearly designed to bend that far?

Why not?

Too much protein bad for the kidneys?

If you have an existing kidney condition or eat a crazy amount, perhaps.

But a ‘high – normal’ amount?

Never seen any research to say that’ll do anything to healthy kidneys.

Weights make you bulky?

Incredibly hard to do (particularly for women without chemical assistance).

And only then if you do specific training for size.

And, even then, the progress would be so slow you could switch to ‘maintenance’ long before you started looking like a bodybuilder.

Eating after 6pm make you fat?

If it puts your in a calorie surplus for the day, sure.

But nothing fundamentally fattening about the time.

Breakfast the most important meal of the day?

The overall total and average is key – if a balanced breakfast stops you having cake and biscuits at work, that’s cool, but nothing particularly magical about the meal itself.

Sugar as addictive as cocaine?

Hyper-palatable, moreish and easy to over do, maybe.

But I’ve never seen anyone mugging their own granny (there she is again) for a bag of Tate & Lyle.

Specific exercises or workouts burn X amount more fat?

When ‘work matched’, no.

A lot of these things, when you stop and think, are kind of common sense.

Something that, sadly, gets too often lost in the Fitness Industry (if you want some of that along with actual structure and fun times with like minded people in an intimidation free atmosphere that has helped hundreds who never liked gyms and slimming clubs achieve the results they desired, then go check out myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

Much love,

Jon ‘As old as my eyes and a bit older than my teeth’ Hall and Matt ‘You’ll catch your death’ Nicholson
