I mentioned in yesterday’s blog about words like “seem” and “feel” suggesting a lack of precision in what we’re doing.
That they indicate an educated guess, at best.
There was a second word in there that I said I would get to today.
“Anywhere”.
If our goal is to just get “anywhere” then we’re already there.
Or if it’s just “away from where we were”, that’s probably happened.
In general, when our goal is vague, it’s hard to feel that we’re on track.
“Feel better”
“Have more energy”
“Get a bit fitter”
How would we even know if that’s happening?
What’s the measure?
Both of destination and progress towards it?
What little markers can we put in that, whilst they might not fully describe what we’re after, at least accurately show progress towards that?
A self assessment (at the same time of day) of how we’re feeling on a scale of 1-10 each day for a month?
Track how much caffeine we feel we need to “get through the day”?
Record how many of a certain exercise we can do in a row or in a minute?
Time how long it takes us to walk up a certain hill to to get our breath back after taking a certain set of stairs.
Ultimately, if our destination is vague, we’re left with how we feel about it all.
And how we feel will usually tell us “not great”.
Much love,
Jon ‘Rotterdam or Liverpool or Rome’ Hall
