I’ve used analogies in which I compare our eating to our usage of money many times.
It doesn’t always work perfectly, sure.
But it works much better than a lot of the ways that we’ve been taught to view our eating.
It’s a fairly common response that people will tell me that they’re going to leave making some positive changes to their eating till some future date……..
Because of things they’ve got on at the moment.
You know – “I can’t do anything with my eating this month because I’ve got a lot of social events”.
Ultimately when we say we’ve got a lot of social events, what we really mean is we’ve got a number of times where we’re likely to consume more than we need.
It’s not socialising in an of itself that can be fattening.
So a comparison we could make is what it says in the title of this blog.
“I’m spending too much money this month to spend less at times”.
Imagine your friend said that to you.
“What do you mean?” would be your understandable response.
“I’ve just got some things on that are going to cost some more money so I’ll have to leave spending less at other times till next month”.
“That doesn’t make any sense whatsoever” you would say.
“Just spend more when you have to and then less at the other times?”
The times when we’re going to be consuming more food and drink are exactly the BEST TIMES to make some adjustments elsewhere.
They are not the times to leave any adjustments whatsoever.
However, much socialising we do, I’d be amazed if it was any more than 10 to 15 meals in a month.
And I would be surprised if we couldn’t average out by adjusting the other 75 to 80 (or more).
Sure, the analogy doesn’t work perfectly.
But it works much, much, much better than claiming that we shouldn’t consume less at sometimes because we’re consuming more at others.
Much love,
