One comment I often get at RISE is “You’re good with names”.

Or people saying “I wish I was as good with names as you are”.

And that’s nice to hear.

Because I put a lot of effort into remembering people’s names.

I’d be disappointed if that then didn’t come across.

Because, despite the general conversation in society, remembering names is not something we are born with or not.

It’s a skill.

Something we get better at with practice.

I used to think I wasn’t very good at remembering names

Until somebody, on a course, pointed out that that’s usually because we haven’t spent all that much time or effort trying to remember someone’s names,

We meet someone at a party, they tell us their name, and 30 seconds later we’re trying to think what it was.

But we never really made all that much effort to commit it to memory.

Ever since then, I’ve made that effort.

When I first meet someone I’ll repeat back their name both in my head and in conversation until it sticks.

I have systems in place at RISE for helping me and the coaches learn everyone’s names.

“Being terrible with names” probably just means that we haven’t actually spent all that much time trying to get better at it.

There are about 5 million minutes per decade.

So for all those minutes we’ve been alive, how many of them have we spent in conscious practise to improve our ability to remember names?

Probably very few.

As is often the same with a lot of things we don’t consider ourselves to be very good at.

We think we’re not very good exercise, but then we’ve only spent a fraction of a percentage of our life doing it.

We think meditation “doesn’t work for us”, but we’ve probably spent single digit minutes out of millions trying it.

We think we’re not a very good cook, or a fussy eater, and haven’t actually spent much time at all trying to get better at those things.

More things in life than we realise are skills.

Sure, some things might come more or less naturally to different people.

But with the right sort of practise we all get better.

We can get better at eating a variety of food……….

Eating a different way……….

Exercising……….

Meditating………..

And anything else……….

By doing them (with proven help here –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply) !

Much love,
