In Saturday’s blog, I talked about appropriate portion sizes.
And I said I’d come back to that today.
That’s two days in a row that I “opened a loop” that I’ve closed in future blogs.
Pro level blogging that.
So, what is an appropriate portion size?
That ultimately depends what our goal is.
If we’re wanting to lose weight, an appropriate portion size is one that puts us in calorie maintenance or deficit.
As I’ve said a thousand times, I know there’s more to eating than calories.
But if we’re wanting to lose weight, a calorie deficit needs to underpin what we’re doing.
Let’s not kid ourselves that some foods are inherently fattening or not.
Let’s challenge those mindsets that tell us that if we have a certain type of food, then we’ve somehow “failed” and should continue to over consume.
We can maintain or lose weight eating anything (again, I know there are other considerations around eating for other reasons, but I’m not talking about that here).
All we need is the appropriate portion sizes.
Our total calorie requirements divided into however many meals, snacks and drinks.
And we can divide that up however we like.
Some periods of consumption will be higher and some will be lower.
But it will always help to have an understanding of the numbers we’re looking at.
if we need 10,000 calories a week to be in a reasonable deficit Then we might choose 200 calorie breakfasts, 200 calories of snacks, most lunches and evening meals around the 400 calorie marks so we can have a few at the weekend that are twice that.
Make some subtractions where necessary for any calorific drinks.
If the total puts us in a calorie deficit, then the portion sizes were appropriate.
If the amount of food calories that equates to is so little that we’re permanently hungry and struggle to do that, then we can choose less calorie-dense options to increase the volume whilst maintaining or reducing those calories.
