I’ve mentioned many times over the years the analogy of our eating being like our finances.
It’s a way that can remove a lot of the emotion that easily gets attached to food.
If we had £100 to spend each week we wouldn’t expect to spend exactly £15.28 each day.
Then beat ourselves up if we spent more than that.
Then decided to “write off” the week, overspend even more and “start again” next week.
We’d just accept that some days we’d spend £20.
Then the next day would have to be a tenner.
Not that big a deal.
Not necessarily easy, sure.
But far less emotion.
And if we overspent by an amount that made it impossible to come in on budget for the week, we’d question that next time.
Our food can be the same.
If 1,500 calories loses us weight at a rate that we’re happy with (other amounts and goals are available) then we could choose to see that as 10,500 for the week.
1,200 in the week meaning we can ‘spend’ another 600 each on a Friday and Saturday night.
And just enjoy that.
Because we’ve made it work.
But…………
Like with money……….
Sometimes we might decide that something is just “too expensive”.
We could have the starter, main, sides, dessert and half a dozen drinks on a Saturday night……….
But if that would mean being starving all week to enable us to come in on budget………
Or to gain weight……….
Is it worth it?
Could we just consider it “out of our budget”.
Enjoy a main and seven lighter drink options to then mean that small adjustments in the week will still average us out?
As always, no right or wrong.
Your money and your food – spend both how you see fit.
But if an “expense” just isn’t worth it………
It’s maybe worth considering other options that fit better into our “budget”.
Much love,
Jon ‘Claim’ Hall
