The other day I was running later than expected on the way back to Macclesfield from seeing family.

By the time I got to RISE, my planned workout time had shrunk to 11 minutes before I needed to leave for school pickup.

What did I do?

Well, this is what I posted on Facebook as I was leaving;

“When you only have 11 minutes spare for a workout, does it make more sense to ;

A – “Leave it”

B – Workout for 11 minutes

Spoiler – I’m doing B”

I’ve made posts along these lines many times over the years.

Most times that I’m doing a really short workout to be honest.

To help question one of the self-limiting beliefs around exercise that holds many people back.

That only a certain amount of exercise is worth doing.

Whenever I make posts or references like this, I get responses along the lines of;

“Is there any point working out for 11 minutes?”

And the short answer is “Yes”.

I did as many pull-ups as I could in 5 minutes and then as many bicep curls as I could do in 5 minutes.

Was it the perfect workout?

No.

Was it more than enough that I could feel it afterwards and would benefit physically from it?

Definitely.

Sure, doing a workout that you could normally do for an hour and only doing 10 minutes might be only so effective.

But if we up the intensity with shortened time, it’s still more than worthwhile.

And, more importantly, it changes that narrative in we have.

When we accept that we can do short workouts and they are worthwhile……….
We never need to stop again.

And, therefore, we never need to “start again”.

It becomes slowing down and speeding up as circumstance dictates.

Doing what we can around what’s going on.

I’m sure you’d agree that two short workouts this week would make three longer ones next week more likely than zero exercise this week would.
