I went for lunch with a couple of mates the other day.

Prime Cut in Macclesfield if you’re interested.

One of them has recently set out to lose some weight.

And, as part of what he’s doing, he’s tracking his food.

Recording what he’s eating with an app (MyFitnessPal in this case).

As I recommend.

For two main reasons;

1. It helps make some more tactical adjustments

Accurately determining appropriate proportion size for someone of our size and activity level (remembering that no food is inherently fattening if eaten in deficit or maintenance calories).

Or maybe swapping a few things around for other options that we’re equally happy to have that contribute less calories (or whatever other nutritional change we’re after).

2. It creates a degree of accountability

Knowing that we’re going to record what we’re eating helps us, on average, make better decisions.

My friend was mentioning how he always tracks on days where he “eats well”.

But on the “not so good days”, it doesn’t always happen.

“Isn’t it funny that that’s the day you’re least least willing to track?” he said (as you’d probably guessed from the blog title).

It’s tempting not to bother tracking those days.

Because “it won’t be good”.

But, when you stop and think about it, that doesn’t make any sense.

It’s like trying to spend less money by only paying attention to how much money we spend on days that we don’t spend much money……….

And ignoring the days where we spend loads.

Maybe sometimes it is a bit harder to track on those days.

More difficult to be accurate with the numbers.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t track fairly accurately.

Or that it takes any more than a few minutes in reality.

And that doesn’t mean that ‘fairly accurate tracking’ won’t, on average, help us make better choices.

Much love,

Jon ‘Half cut’ Hall

P.S. A bit of accountability around lots of things makes a real difference. Find out more about how we help with that on our risk free four week trial –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
