You seen ‘The Truman Show’?
The 1998 film with Jim Carrey.
If not, he plays a guy called Truman who has, unknowingly, spent his entire life as the star of a reality TV show.
He lives on a island and all the other people there are actors playing roles related to him.
His every move broadcast to the rest of the planet.
When he is young he starts to develop an interest in leaving the island.
Which is, of course, a concern to the producers.
So, they create a situation where his ‘Dad’ ‘drowns’ infront of him.
Creating in Truman a lifelong fear of the sea.
It’s only when the truth starts to reveal itself that he summons the courage to tackle the sea and discovers the outer wall of the set.

Experiences in our youth can stay with us for life.
Big, powerful ones.
And smaller, repeated ones.
If we let them.
Our attitude towards healthy food and exercise can easily be shaped by the experiences of our youth.
A regular mindset people have when we first meet them is……..
That healthy food is boring, plain, tasteless, etc.
That’s its expensive and time consuming.
That eating healthily is restrictive and involves willpower and motivation.
When we explore things with them, we might look at where this belief has come from.
And, nearly always, they’ve “Just always thought it”.
And it’s often based on what they’ve heard from others – parents, friends, teachers and so on.
Later reinforced by colleagues and others.
Sometimes ‘compounded’ by a few bigger, more memorable, experiences that have stuck in their brain and ‘confirmed’ this opinion.
The time they ‘tried a detox’ and fell violently ill.
When they followed some eating plan and head headaches for days.
That time the P.E. teacher made them do the lesson in their pants / knickers and everyone laughed.
The story they heard about someone who died while jogging or in a gym.
And so on.
And it often takes a big event to help people reevaluate these beliefs.
‘That photo’.
The time they got stuck in the theme park ride seat.
The comment from a friend or loved one that they smiled through but were ‘dying inside’.
And they come to realise, over time, that there are plenty of ways to eat well and exercise that are enjoyable and maintainable.
That, without realising, they had been ‘cherry picking’ confirmations of their old beliefs.
And ignoring contradictory stuff.
People often comment after a number of weeks that “something’s just clicked”.
That it feels like “a curtain has been pulled back”.
The beliefs that previously held them back have changed.
To at least a sufficient degree.
They may never ‘love’ exercise, but find it much more ‘OK’ than they used to (myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of that).
And more than worth it for the benefits.
Much love,
Jon ‘Dumb and Dumber’ Hall and Matt ‘Cable Guy’ Nicholson
