During the first Lockdown I built a wooden surround for the desk I had occasionally been using in my basement.
Prior to then, I did most of my work down at RISE and just the odd bit at that desk or with my laptop on my lap in the lounge.
Being at home all the time meant using that desk more and I built the wooden surround to make it a nicer place to work rather than looking at the basement walls.
At the end of 2020, as we went into the second Lockdown and with the temperatures being considerably lower, I extended the desks surround into a full wooden box with a door.
I put a mains powered oil radiator in in order to keep it warm and put it on a smart switch so I could set it going before I even went down.
The way I built it left a small gap between the top of the desk box and the ceiling of the bit that I sat in.
I meant, at the time, to put a bar across the top to both close that gap and to make it the whole structure a little more solid.
I never got round to it until the other day.
And I was immediately bowled over by the increased in temperature.
It’s like a sauna in there now.
I’m not daft, I know heat rises.
But I was still surprised what a difference that small gap had made to the temperature.
If I had a realised two years ago, I’d have sorted it then.
An easy adjustment for disproportional benefit.
As are many things we can do in life.
We often get hung up on the massive, time consuming and really difficult changes………
And, when we can’t do them, we essentially do nothing at all.
Missing the relatively easy to make adjustments that add up.
Just swapping a few meals and ingredients around for ones that we like just as much……..
That cost similar…….
Are equally time-consuming and convenient……..
But contribute less calories.
The changing of drinks for lower, or zero, calorie versions.
The realisation that just stopping eating a little bit sooner rarely makes much difference to our overall enjoyment.
Little, easy to make adjustments.
Disproportionate benefit (apply now at www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the sound of a programme that helps with changes like that rather than just the same list of really hard to do things that you’ve had before).
Much love,
