Have you ever set an intention that sounds a bit like this;
“I need to exercise more”
“I’m going to eat better”
“Drink less”
“Be less bothered about what other people think about me”
“Get less distracted”
“Be more organised”
“Spend more time with the kids”
“Make more time for me”
And so on?
I imagine we all have.
They sound like perfectly valid goals, on the face of it.
The problem though with goals that start with “more”, “less” and “better”……..
Is that they’re too vague.
It’s hard to know if they’re happening.
And our determination of success on goals like that comes down to how we “feel” about it.
And how we feel will usually tell us it’s not going great.
Any time we start a sentence with “I just feel……” we’re, at least, semi guessing.
If we have something more concrete to go off, then one of two things happens;
1. We’re achieving our plan and that creates confidence and momentum
2. We’re not on track, but we’ve got something to base a course correction off.
Either to catch up……..
Or to set a new plan that will work.
Intending to get three workouts in per week and diarising them for set times is way more likely to happen than “exercise more”.
And, if it doesn’t, we can work out why and how to change that.
Averaging 1,500 in calories a day (10,500) for the week) is more likely to happen than “eating better”.
Only drinking twice per week is more likely to happen than “drinking less”.
Spending two lots of 30 minutes per week with each child is more likely to happen than “spend more time” with them is.
Scheduling 10 minutes at the start and end of the day to look at our goals and our plan for the week and day is more likely to benefit us than trying to “be more organised”.
And so on.
Vague leaves us with how we feel it’s going.
Which will probably not be great.
Precise allows us to build confidence and momentum when it happens.
It gives us something to go off and adjust from when it doesn’t.
Next time you catch yourself planning “more”, “less” or “better”……..
Then set yourself up for success by sticking a number on it.
