I mentioned in yesterday’s blog a quick workout I did at RISE the other day.

I also sometimes train in a local Globo Gym.

RISE has been my place of work for over 12 years so it’s nice to get some variety.

Whilst I was getting changed beforehand I noticed the scale they have in the changing rooms.

Measures things like weight, height and body fat.

A bit like the InBody 270 we use, but no way near as comprehensive.

I thought I’d give it a go out of interest.

As I mentioned in recent blogs, I’ve gained a bit of weight over the last few years.

Not loads, I know.

But more than I’d like.

Whilst on pure weight alone these scales put me in the middle of the recommended range (because I have above average muscle mass)……….

For the body fat percentage and total body fat levels it still had me slightly under.

I was half a pound below the bottom of the range of recommended levels of body fat.

Meaning it felt that I should have more body fat than I do now.

Despite having more body fat than I’ve had in probably 20 years.

Which was a reminder that guidelines aren’t as unrealistic as we might like to tell ourselves.

It’s tempting when we’re carrying a lot of extra weight to look at government guidelines and think “I could never be that light”.

Or “They show rugby players and bodybuilders as being overweight” (despite the fact that we’re not rugby players or bodybuilders and very few people are and that plenty of rugby players are carrying extra body fat).

I’ve had hundreds of conversations over the years where people have become relatively slim and then dropped to the mid to low end of recommended weight ranges when they’d previously dismissed that as impossible.

Recommended ranges aren’t great if you are unusually tall or short or have particularly high muscle levels.

But this will be less than 1% of the population.

For the rest of us, if we’re not in the ranges, then we’ve got body fat that we could lose (if we wanted to).

Much love,

P.P.S. If a FREE ’10 Day Pass’ to try out one of the very best of it’s kind in the country doesn’t tempt you, I don’t know what will. Offer ends at midnight tonight –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
