I’m currently working through the Roald Dahl classic Matilda with my two eldest sons.

I was reading them a chapter the other night and had to stop and make a note of a sentence to share with you guys.

Firstly though, I’ll set the scene in case you haven’t read the book / seen the film or can’t remember the plot.

Matilda is a five year old girl who lives with her parents and brother.

Matilda is a genius, despite having no support and encouragement from her Mum and Dad.

Matilda teaches herself to read and has read many of the classics before she even starts school.

Her parents only source of entertainment is watching the TV for hours every night.

And the fact that Matilda ignores the TV and reads is a source of irritation to them.

“She kept right on reading and, for some reason, this infuriated the father”

“Perhaps his anger was intensified because he saw her getting he saw her getting pleasure from something that was beyond his reach”

Which is much the same as the people who like to criticise you when you make positive changes in your life.

You know the ones.

They say stuff like “Stop being so boring”

“You’re no fun anymore”

“You’re getting obsessed”

And so on.

Despite you actually being happier and having more fun than you have in a long time.

The issue is theirs.

They are triggered by you gaining pleasure from something that is beyond them (at that point in time anyway).

You succeeding holds a light up to their own justifications for their behaviours.

If you struggle to lose weight, get in shape, etc………

Then it validates their reasons.

“It is impossible for us because of our work, kids, busy lives, injuries, illness, age, it’s too boring, too expensive, etc.”

When you succeed and enjoy it, it invalidates those reasons.

Holds a mirror up to their reasoning and they may not like what they see.

Just know that this is ‘normal’ human behaviour.

After over 15 years in this industry I don’t think I’ve had a single client who hasn’t encountered it.

Know it’s normal.

Ignore it and move on 🙂

Much love,

Jon
