I woke up this morning to a surprising amount of snow.
As I’m sure many of us did.
The snow on Saturday night was lighter than forecast.
And then last night it was heavier.
I’ve seen people on Facebook this morning complaining about those “inaccuracies” of prediction.
But those that make the predictions are doing the best they can with information they have.
After all, they are essentially predicting the future.
Basing those predictions on pre-observed patterns of what’s happened in the past.
But it’s rare that they’re absolutely miles out.
The weather is probably the least predictable aspect of our week.
But even then we can predict it fairly well.
The rest of our time we can make better plans than we might tell ourselves.
Sure, we’ve got a lot on……..
We’re busy……..
But out of the 10,080 minutes in the week, I’m sure there’s a fair number that we just ‘fill’ as we go along.
No real plan to fit in the things that might get missed.
The things that we then tell ourselves that we “didn’t have time for”.
Even though we’d not really planned when to do them.
It’s tempting to tell ourselves that we don’t like to plan too much because we “like to go with the flow”.
Or we “like a bit of freedom”.
Forgetting that the flow is taking us somewhere we don’t want to go.
That by not getting done the things that increase our energy levels, endurance and mood we actually have less freedom to do everything we want in life.
By just ‘fitting in’ things and doing them less efficiently than if they’d been more tightly planned, we reduce our freedom of time.
We can predict how much of the week is going to pan out.
Probably more accurately than the weather predictions.
And we can then make plans to make sure that we assign that finite resource of time in a way that serves as best.
Remembering that more planning and scheduling doesn’t reduce our freedom.
It increases it.
