I had a similar conversation with a few different people the other day.

And. as always. I know that if a few people are expressing those things to me………

They’ll be many others who are finding the same.

That would benefit from hearing my thoughts about it in one of these blogs.

We were talking about “perfectionism”.

People expressing that they hadn’t done something because they were “a bit of a perfectionist”.

Which I get.

I’ve had those thoughts at times.

But I’m not sure that they’re really true.

Is every single aspect of our life ever perfect?

I know mine never has been.

Nowhere near close.

We’re, essentially, ok with ‘doing alright’ in some areas.

We don’t not do anything with them because it can’t be perfect.

So why do we think that’s the case in other areas?

If we knew for sure that we could do something that we knew to not be perfect……..

But that everyone else would definitely think was amazing……..

I’m pretty sure we’d do it.

So, if that’s the case, our concern is not it being perfect………

It’s being perceived by others to have not done a good enough job.

To be criticised.

If we knew for sure that if we were to give that speech at work that……..

However we felt about it……….

Everyone else would think it was awesome…….

I think we’d do it.

The same with that video, written work, side hustle or idea that we’ve been unwilling to “put out there” because “it’s not quite ready”.

If we tell ourselves that we’re “a perfectionist”………

Or that we’re “all or nothing”………

Then doing, essentially, nothing is a great way to avoid receiving criticism.

But, let’s face it, we’re going to get criticised anyway.

We get criticised when we succeed.

We get criticised when we don’t achieve what we set out to.

And we get criticised when we don’t do anything at all.

Avoiding criticism isn’t an option.

All we can do is choose the type of criticism that we receive.

And, I think we’d all agree, the criticism that comes with success is the one we’d most like to get.

If we wait until things are perfect…….

We’ll be waiting a very long time.

If we become ok with putting things out there at “good enough”………

Accepting that they’ll be criticism either way……..

We’ll achieve more in life than by only be willing to put out things when they’re “perfect”.

Much love,
