One of my nephews turns 17 next year.

He’ll have just got his GCSE results as this comes out.

His mum (my sister) has started prepping him for learning to drive by asking him questions as they drive about.

I was with them the other day and it was interesting to hear, and be reminded of, various things I’ve forgotten in the quarter century since I learned to drive.

Or, if I’d not forgotten, things I couldn’t put across as succinctly as I would have once done.

For example “What’s the difference between circular and triangular road signs?”

I’d have replied with something like “Circular ones are things like the speed limit and triangular are showing things that are coming up, like bends in the road”.

Not incorrect.

But not as clear a definition as she gave.

“Circular are rules, triangular are advisory”.

Things you have to do and things, perhaps, you might benefit from knowing about.

An important distinction to be able to make.

And one we often miss in everyday life.

Doing the equivalent of making a triangular sign circular.

Telling ourselves “I can’t do that”.

Or, worse, listening to others who tell us “You can’t do that”.

Living a life based on these imaginary rules around what we “should”, “shouldn’t”, “need to” and “ought to” do.

Getting to our death bed having not really lived the life we wanted to live because of these ‘restrictions’ we, and others, placed on how we should behave and what we should do (check www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you’d like more energy, focus and enthusiasm to live the life you’d like).

As always, there’s no right or wrong.

Live your life as you wish.

But it’s always worth remembering that almost of these “cans” and “can’ts” are ‘advisory’ at best.

Much love,

Jon ‘Was in the south of France recently and saw a road sign for “Nice – Cannes”. Tapped my wife on the bottom whilst gesturing to the sign and said “Nice can”. She didn’t get it. Wasted!’ Hall
