My good wife Alex was working from home the other day.
And in several phone conversations I overhead her using expressions along the lines of “What I can do is………..”
So I asked her about that.
She knows at her work to never give a flat “No”.
As in a “I can’t do that”.
What she tries to do is, essentially “It’s not a no. What I can do is XYZ.”
Essentially a compromise between what someone else might want her to do and what she can, realistically, manage under the circumstances.
A great way to look at our choices.
Don’t Write Off Exercise
Whilst we may take a similar approach at work, we’re very quick to do the opposite with our health and fitness.
When we can’t make the three workouts we would like to make that week, it’s very easy to ‘write off’ that week and do none.
And then that week soon rolls on to a fortnight or a month (or twelve).
We could instead give a “It’s not a no. I can’t do the 3 workouts but I can deliver 2”.
Or a “This week I can do 2 sessions at RISE and one home workout from the app”. Don’t write off exercise.
Same with food.
Rather than ‘Having the weekend off’………
We could say “I won’t be able to have 9 ‘perfect’ meals this weekend, but what I can do is enjoy that party on Friday and meal on Saturday night and cut portions and prioritise protein and water for the rest of the weekend to average out ok”.
You get the idea.
Treat the things related to your health and fitness like you would a work request..
You wouldn’t flat out refuse to do it, you’d give some form of compromise that everyone was, at least, reasonably ok with, would you?
Much love,
