In yesterday’s blog I talked about anxiety.
How it isn’t necessarily a bad thing
All emotions having their place.
And what I’m going to talk about today is very similar.
A term that I’m sure we’ve all heard used more and more in recent years is “Imposter Syndrome”.
Google NGram viewer shows a relative 10 fold increase in use of the term in print media over the last decade.
Following a near tripling in the previous decade.
“an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be”
Possibly with a feeling that we could get “caught out” at any moment.
Maybe that we don’t deserve where we’re “at” or what we’re doing.
Google suggests that a syndrome is “a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition”.
Google also shows numerous studies that suggest that between 70 and 90% have reported such feelings at times.
Hardly “abnormal”.
Perfectly standard according to that.
Normal.
Not actually a syndrome at all you might say.
Just normal feelings that we all have.
You could argue that it’s a good thing.
How “small” would we be having to play to not get any of those feelings of being “out of our comfort zone” at all?
And how much discomfort would that never challenging ourselves bring, longer term?
As with anxiety, these feelings can be seen as the emotions of growth.
You could argue that we have to be an imposter at anything long enough to actually become it.
We have to just give it a go somewhere between badly and mediocrely for long enough to get better at it.
Next time you’re feeling that way, remember that ‘Imposter Syndrome’ isn’t really a thing.
And those feelings are the emotions of growth (clicking this link and requesting info about our programme will feel uncomfortable, but it’s the first step of growth that you’ll never regret –> https://wa.me/447897031487?text=Info) .
Much love,
