I was recently taking my middle son to his football.

We’d both got drinks with us.

In matching Man U flasks (thanks Steve – you’re such a legend).

———– Disclaimer: I’m a Derby County ‘well wisher’ at most but my two oldest sons have become United fans for reasons which escape me ———–

Mine was a coffee.

Jamie’s was water.

“Why does the flask keep my drink cold and yours hot Dad?” he asked.

Which is a great question.

I’m sure you know that such flasks work because a vacuum has been created between the outer and inner walls of the flask.

There’s nothing there for the heat to pass through in either direction.

As heat can’t pass through a vacuum.

Pretty smart isn’t it?

It got me thinking though.

About vacuums.

I know – party time!

We use them in our flasks, our hoovers, in industry and so on.

Useful things.

But………..

Where we go wrong………….

Is to try and use them in our attempts to change our behaviour.

When we try and just ‘stop’ doing something.

Eating certain things or too much.

Drinking too much (or any) alcohol.

Swearing, smoking, taking drugs, gambling, caffeine, watching TV, social media, sugar, fast food and various other things that could be consider habits we might want to reduce or stop.

We decide “I’m just going to stop XYZ”.

Or maybe “Cut down”.

And that creates a vacuum.

A “cake shaped hole” in our lives.

And we can, perhaps, use willpower to force ourselves to do that.

For a while.

But, willpower is a ‘finite resource’.

It runs out.

We only need willpower for stuff we don’t really want to do.

And that can only ever last so long.

What, perhaps, will work better, is adding something else in instead.

Where the other thing(s) just, kinda, has to make room.

Doing different activities that you enjoy.

Eating other fresh, nutritious food that you like the taste of and makes you look and feel good.

Concentrating on the benefits of more energy, better sleep, improved mood, health, fitness and so on.

Rather than the stuff that might have to make space for that.

You get the idea.

Don’t attempt to change something by just creating a vacuum where it was.

Fill that space with something else even better (like what we do –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting)!

Much love,
