There’s an expression.

There are lots of expressions actually.

I’m just thinking of a particular one.

“Change happens when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of change”.

I quite like it.

But I’ve come to realise it’s not quite right.

It’s not the actual levels of “pain” that are relevant.

It’s the perceived levels of “pain”.

It’s pretty common that, when people start with us and make the changes that take them in the direction that they want to go in, that they comment………..

“It’s not as hard as I thought it was going to be”.

We often build these things up to be more difficult than they actually are.

Changing the way we eat feels like this massive hurdle.

Fitting in as much exercise as we think we should do feels impossible on top of everything else we’ve got on.

But we can often make more forward progress with smaller changes than we realise.

We’re all about tactical adjustments to our eating.

Attempting to go from eating the way we do to eating like an Olympic athlete or monk isn’t tactical.

It’s a brute force approach with the subtlety of a bulldozer.

Like trying to get to the other side of a wall by running head first into it.

Sure, it’s the “fastest” route.

But taking a little longer to walk around the side is more likely to get us there.

Better understanding of relevant portion sizes for someone of our size and activity levels and some smart swaps of meals for ones that we like just as much but that contribute less calories and / or more nourishment of some sort…………..

Might take a little longer than Tupperware full of chicken and broccoli……….

But we’ll actually get there.

And whilst grinding ourselves into the ground for two hours, five times a week would clearly get us faster results than three 45 minute RTP Sessions………..

Again, we’re way more likely to do the latter.

So, if we’re struggling to make changes, we have two things we can question…………

How much “pain” will staying the same cause (probably more than we like to admit)?

And how much “pain” is actually involved in some tactical changes that will move us towards where we’d like to go (probably less than we’re telling ourselves)?

If the former is greater than the latter…………

Then let’s start doing the things in the latter!
