What’s by far and away the most common reason people give for stopping their membership with us?

If you’ve read these blogs before, you’ll know it’s “Time”.

As in “I haven’t felt I’ve been able to put enough time into this to justify the investment”.

Which is a shame as it’s usually, from our experience, a choice in use of time.

10,080 minutes in the week.

And that person’s Facebook feed usually suggesting that not every one of them is going on something more important than their health, mood and wellbeing.

But that’s a separate blog.

What’s the most common reason people give before they start when I ask “What would you say has been your biggest struggle in doing that by yourself?”

With regards to their goal.

“Motivation”.

Nearly every time.

Which I get.

We feel we need to be motivated.

And when we’re not feeling that it’s easy not to do.

The thing with motivation though?

It’s a nice to have.

It’s not necessary.

The body responds exactly the same way to exercise and / or what we put into it regardless of whether we felt motivated while we were doing it.

Or not.

And, the funny thing is, we are actually motivated.

All the time.

When we look at what motivation is.

The dictionary defines it as;

“a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way”.

Do you have reasons for exercising and / or eating better?

Then you have motivation.

What’s happened is we’ve confused motivation with “feeling like” doing the process.

No one is motivated to do the process alone.

If all I got from exercise was the enjoyment of the workout itself………….

No changes in body shape…………

No increased fitness, energy levels and mood………..

No reduced aches and pains………….

No improved sleep…………

Then there’s not a chance I’d do it.

I don’t enjoy my workouts that much (sometimes at all).

There’s tonnes of stuff I do purely for the enjoyment.

Where I am motivated entirely by the process as there is no follow on outcome.

Or, maybe even a less than positive one.

We’re motivated by what exercise and healthier eating brings.

Not by the thing itself.

Maybe a better question to ask ourselves is not;

“Do I feel like having a workout?”

But;

“Do I want to feel and look better?”

If the answer is yes;

“How do I do that?”

And a workout might be the answer to that.

Much love,
