You may be aware of our ‘8 week challenges’.

Lose 20lbs in 8 weeks or get down to a lean body fat percentage (if you have less than 20lbs to lose) and do a few other things and you get the next two months for free.

It’s a way to get people in the door to see what we do (that door’ll be open for a ‘look round’ tomorrow night –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

And to incentivise and motivate people in those early stages.

Get them off to a good start on their journey.

Despite what some FitPros tell you, slow weight loss isn’t the best.

Or, should I say, the research shows that people who lose weight slowly to start with are less likely to continue to lose weight.

They get demotivated by that pace and how long it will all take.

Those who get off to a quicker start and have a plan to transition into something they find maintainable long term are (in some studies) up to five times more likely to achieve their goal.

That transition is key.

Fast weight loss followed by fast weight gain clearly isn’t great.

Relatively quick weight loss followed slower weight loss followed by maintenance?

Or even that relatively quick weight loss followed by maintenance?

Will be more likely to improve health, surely?

Back to my original point though.

For a challenge to become free (ie: get the next two months), the weight being lost has to be “fresh”.

New weight loss.

To give you an example, coach Faye joined us 5 years ago.

Did three back to back challenges.

Lost twenty something pounds in her first two months.

Then another twenty odd in the next eight weeks.

Then got down to a lean body fat percentage in the following fifty six days (good job she didn’t do a fourth challenge as I’d have to put in hours).

Total of 55lbs lost.

Six months free membership.

Then, a little while later, became a coach so doesn’t pay membership 😉

That’s fine.

Awesome actually.

We’re well up for results like that.

But the system isn’t designed to encourage yo-yoing.

Lose 20lbs then leave then regain it and then want to do another challenge to lose that same weight?

We can’t have a system that incentivises that.

Over the years we’ve had a number of people ask about that.

They’ve lost the weight, left for various reasons, regained the weight then asked about doing another challenge.

They can, of course, do the programme and lose the weight.

That would be a great plan.

But it just wouldn’t be for free.

When we remind people of that, there’s one of two reactions.

Some go “Yeah, makes sense. I’m still in, I just wasn’t sure how it worked”.

And some go “I’ll leave it then”.

Which is there call, of course.

But, does that make sense.

Free stuff is nice.

But really, when you think about it, that’s the least important part of the challenge.

Having a body you like the look and feel of (more)?

Increased energy levels?

Possibly improved sex drive / live?

A statistically higher chance of living longer?

Maybe less aches and pains, bloatedness and other similar things?

All waayyyyy more important that a bit of cash, surely?

We get it, of course.

Money always needs to be considered.

Everyone’s budget is finite and must be assigned to what they value.

But it’s always worth remembering what the real value of the changes to our lives and bodies is.

What can be kept at the front of our minds to help us when motivation wanes.

When things start to get in the way.

And what’s still nice, sure.

But ‘surely the least important bit’.
