If you’ve read these blogs for any period of time, you’ll know that I regularly mentione that a calorie deficit has to underpin our approach to weight loss.

I sometimes get replies to these blogs about that.

Telling me that “There’s more to weight loss than calories in versus calories out”.

All that “Weight loss is multifactorial”.

I know this.

I’ve helped people make these kind of changes for over two decades now.

That weight loss is multifactorial has not escaped me.

A quick Google breaks these factors down into the following 10 categories;

1. Dietary Habits

2. Physical Activity

3. Metabolism

4. Genetics

5. Hormones

6. Psychological Factors

7. Sleep

8. Age

9. Medical Conditions

10. Social and Environmental Factors

In different people different combinations of these factors may be considerations on their weight loss journey.

And these factors will change over time for the same person.

But there’s one factor that is always in play.

It’s that calorie deficit.

We could have any combination of dozens of different factors, but, if we’re weren’t in a calorie surplus then we wouldn’t be able to gain weight.

This doesn’t mean getting in a calorie deficit is easy.

Far from it sometimes.

But there being other factors that make it hard does not mean that that one factor is not in play.

And I hope you know I don’t say this to be mean (www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you want help someone who is understanding and supportive but will also help to see through the miss-information, get you doing the right thing and hold you accountable)

It’s said to empower us.

To make sure that, whatever approach we’re taking, it is underpinned by the most essential thing.

What I never want to happen is for someone to make loads of effort in changing numerous factors but then not lose weight because they’re not in a calorie deficit.

That’s the worst combination.

Much love,

Jon ‘MCS’ Hall
