What’s your favourite coffee?
Something from Starbucks maybe?
Or elsewhere perhaps?
—- Other coffee shops are available —-
Did anyone say instant coffee made at home?
I wouldn’t imagine so.
But, that’s probably the one we have most often.
Even outside of lockdown.
Now I’m aware it’s, in part becuase of the cost.
But let’s say Starbucks, Costa, et al started offering their drinks for free.
You’d probably have more, sure.
But I reckon the instant at home would still be the most frequent.
Because it’s easier.
The clue’s in the name.
It’s instant.
Reasonable pleasure instantly vs. more pleasure in the future with more effort required.
And that’s what derails many of our goals.
We often say we’re procrastinating.
Putting things off to a later date.
And we kinda are.
But what we’re really doing is something else instead.
Something that probably benefits us less.
But where the benefit is instant.
I think most would agree that the overall benefits of getting enough sleep, eating well and drinking moderate alcohol at most………
Outweigh the benefits of staying up late, eating crap and getting pissed.
But the benefits of the later are instant.
The former are in the future.
The benefits of sending those important work emails, having quality time with loved ones and planning our meals outweighs that of scrolling through Facebook.
But social media gives that instant hit.
Much like there’s nothing wrong with instant coffee, there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with any of these things.
We don’t need to stop any of them complelety.
But, if the amount of them we’re doing is taking away from the stuff that’s more important to us…………
If too much ‘instant’ means we’re not getting enough of the ‘good stuff’………….
It’s maybe worth questioning.
Much love,
