Every single month I get a few messages out of nowhere from former members looking to come back.
There’s a mixture of reasons that people left in the first place.
For some it was unavoidable logistical challenges that have since resolved.
For some it was, at least, in part to save money.
People sometimes deciding to ‘go it alone’ and try and do it themselves by joining a gym.
From my experience, in a pretty high proportion of those cases, those people then go on to get considerably worse results.
They come back to us having it undone most, if not all, of the good work from when they were previously a member.
And I get it.
We all have finite budgets.
At times we all feel the need to trim some expenses.
But, the other day, a returning member hit the nail on the head with this one for me.
They had joined a conventional gym which was a pound something less per day.
So, as they said, “I’ve been getting paid a pound a day to be miserable and fat”.
We wouldn’t do it if it was literally that way around, would we?
Wherever our mood, energy levels and weight were, if someone offered to pay us a pound something a day for them to be worse, we would never take it, would we?
But we sometimes have a very different mindset around saving money.
We’d happily go out of our way to save £1 on a purchase.
But if someone told us that we had to go somewhere because there was a pound coin on the pavement we could pick up, I doubt we’d be bothered.
And, again, I get that budget management is slightly different.
But if our budget management is essentially making us fat and miserable, then could we question where else we could make adjustments?
Much love,
Jon ‘able spanner’ Hall
