A couple of months ago we had a smart meter fitted at home.

You know the type – shows you how much electricity (and gas) you’re using at that point and per day, week, etc.

I assume everyone who’s ever got one did what I did?

Wander round the house turning things on and off to see how much they cost to run.

Then deciding that “we really should turn that off when we’re not using it”.

It’s that instant feedback.

Just getting a bill at the end of the month isn’t quite the same.

It’s more than we’d like it to be, sure.

And it’s pretty obvious we’ve been ‘over-consuming’.

But we’re not quite sure where to make the changes.

And we just, kinda, end up forgetting about it.

And carrying on like we did before.

Until we get the next bill.

A bit like weighing ourselves every month.

It’s gone up.

It’s obvious there’s been some ‘over-consuming’.

We’re not daft.

And we have a rough idea where some of it comes from.

And we might make some tweaks.

It’ll drop for a few days.

But it’s quickly forgotten about till we get out next ‘bill’.

That instant feedback of the smart meter is so much more powerful.

Seeing the impact of our choice in the here and now makes it much more likely we’ll make some ‘better’ decisions.

Not always, of course.

Sometimes we’ll be more than happy with that ‘spend’.

But we’ll probably spend less overall.

And tracking our food and drink is the nutritional equivalent.

Punching what we’re eating into MyFitnessPal (check ‘Nutrition’ under the Learn tab or page if you’re a member or myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if, for some reason, you’re not) gives us that instant feedback.

We can see the ‘cost’ of what we’re doing immediately.

Not in a month when we’ll have forgotten about what we did.

When it’ll have blended in with all the other countless ‘spends’.

If you’re ever found a smart meter has enabled you to get your bills down pretty easily………….

Tracking will enable you to do the same with your weight 🙂

Much love,
