I was doing the ironing the other day while my three eldest kids watcher ‘The Deep’.
Party time in my house it was!
They mentioned ‘The Sirens’.
Of ancient Greek mythology fame.
Beautiful part women, part birds who lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks with their enchanting music and singing.
You remember the story of Odysseus (aka Ulysses) from Homer’s Odyssey i’m sure?
He wanted to the hear the lovely sound he’d hear about.
But, understandably, was less keen on the old ‘death on the rocks’ bit.
So he got his crew to lash him to the mainframe (how they used to say ‘tie him to the mast’ apparently).
And then block their own ears.
With strict instructions to not release him until they had passed, no matter how much he ordered and / or begged them.
Smart dude!
No trying to rely on willpower for Mr. O there.
He engineered a situation where willpower wasn’t a factor.
Like you can too 🙂
From my experience, the big change that happens when someone who’s struggled in the past achieves lasting change……..
Isn’t that they’ve developed more willpower…….
It’s that they’ve stopped (or massively reduced) how much willpower is a factor.
Not having things in at home to tempt them.
Doesn’t mean they’ll never have them again.
Just not sat starting them in the face when they are at their hungriest and tiredest.
Similar at work.
Minimising how much crappy food is their to tempt their willpower.
Either not taking it in………
Or asking others not to wave it under their noses.
Having good meals in stock and ready………..
So that when it comes to ‘Hungry O Clock’, it’s easier to eat that than go out of the way to get something less good.
Rather than the other way round.
You get the point, I’m sure.
The less you need to use your willpower, the better (check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of an approach that isn’t just about ‘trying harder’).
Be like Odysseus and do the equivalent of lashing yourself to the mainframe.
Much love,
