If you remember your Greek mythology (and who doesn’t?) you’ll be aware of the Sirens.
Enchanting creatures who would lure sailors to their deaths on the rocks with their music and song.
Ulysses was a smart, if somewhat fictional, dude.
He wanted to see what the crack was with these Sirens.
Were they really better than Adele as Peisistratus had told him (I may have made this bit up)?
But, unsurprisingly, he wasn’t made keen on the whole ‘dying on the rocks’ bit.
So he gets his men to tie him to the ships mast.
With strict orders that they are not to untie him, no matter what he says or does.
Then the men have wax put in their ears so they can’t hear owt.
And they sail past the Sirens.
Ulysses thinks it’s brill.
“This is brill” he says “Lads, let me go, yeah?”
But they don’t.
And all is ok.
The men, of course, have no problem.
Don’t even notice the sounds.
Nothing to resist for them.
Because, as we all know, it’s much easier not to be ‘exposed’ to something than it is to try and resist it.
Willpower is a ‘finite resource’.
And we deplete it every time we see crisps / chocolate covered sugar bars / cake / biscuits / bottles of booze.
Until we have some.
Unless we have someone who’ll tie us up………..
Lucky you 😉
Then were much easier doing the equivalent of the olde wax in the ears.
Don’t have things in at home.
If they have to be (for some reason which escapes me), have them out of sight.
Don’t have them, or at least hide them at work.
Don’t drive past the place you can by them from on the way home (ie: take a different route rather than never going home).
You get the idea.
Don’t test your willpower unnecessarily.
Much love,
Jon ‘Homer’ Hall and Matt ‘S Grant’ Nicholson
P.S. Just a point for those middle names.
P.P.S. Yesterday’s middle names were ‘Happy Mondays’ songs 🙂
P.P.S. As always, check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you’re in or near Macc and like the sound of approach that isn’t just “try harder”.
