Yesterday morning, I did an InBody assessment for one of our members.

Let’s call him Lee.

Long term readers of this blog might expect me to now go “Because that’s his name”.

But it’s not in this case.

Because of his job Lee, doesn’t do social media and wouldn’t want me to directly reference him in a blog.

Note: For anyone who’s ever been put off joining because “I don’t want my picture to be on social media, like all those ones I see” or “I don’t want to be referenced in a blog” – that only happens to people who choose / are happy for that and we won’t even ask once we know someone isn’t.

Lee had dropped under 85 kilos.

“When was the last time you weighed less than 85 kilos Lee?” I said.

“I was thinking about this the other day” he replied.

“I reckon I must have been 19 years old”.

Which, when you think about it, makes sense.

Other than body fat levels his body won’t have changed much since then.

It’s easy to look at ‘Height – weight and BMI charts and tell ourselves “That’s ridiculous. I could never be that light”.

That’s exactly what I told myself when I was a near 17 stone engineering student.

But, over the years, everyone I’ve ever trained personally who’s got down to what you could call “slim”……….

Has found their weight to be roughly in the middle of those recommended ranges.

Maybe it’s not all that applicable to “rugby players and bodybuilders”, sure.

But, unless we are a rugby player or a bodybuilder (or unusually short or tall), it probably is quite applicable to us.

As always, it’s our body to do with what we like.

We can carry whatever levels of body fat we desire, and no one should tell us otherwise or try and make us feel bad for that choice.

But that doesn’t mean I won’t help people question if they do have levels of body fat that they could remove if they chose to.

If you lined up a random 100 people who had a BMI over 30……..

I would wager there would be something like one bodybuilder, one rugby player and 98 people who are carrying excess body fat.

BMI and height – weight charts aren’t perfect.

And they’re not the only tool we might use.

But they are more accurate and useful than we might think and than some might tell us.

As, fundamentally, our body won’t have changed all that much since we were teenagers.

We might have gained a little bit of muscle mass (maybe) but, for for majority of us, most of our increase in weight will be body fat.

Much love,

Jon ‘Have gained a stone or so in the last couple of years and can tell you it’s all fat’ Hall
