So, I had my one off return to wrestling match at the Leisure Centre on Saturday.

It went well and I was happy with the shape I’d gotten into for it (you can see it at www.facebook.com/joncwhall/posts/10155525758940219 if you’re remotely interested).

On Friday I covered the value of having a goal to work towards to help you get in better shape.

That long term stuff like health, etc is great………

But tied in with a series of shorter term, more immediate goals it works even better.

Today is lesson number two that I learnt or was reminded of whilst getting back in shape.

And that’s the value of accountability and ‘skin in the game’

Having a goal is cool.

But if only you know about it……..

And it makes no difference whether you achieve it or not………

You’re fairly likely to drop off at some point.

I know I am.

For my match, once it was announced, I knew I’d be doing it.

And I could either turn up on the day happy with how I looked and was able to perform.

Or be disappointed in myself that I hadn’t.

And probably quite embarrassed.

My ‘skin in the game’ was knowing that 400+ people, including many friends, family and clients, would see me both half naked and out there with regular, full time and mostly considerably younger professionals.

Only you know what level of accountability and skin in the game will work best for you.

It could be announcing your intention and updating people on Facebook.

That’s a major reason I announce stuff – it makes me do it.

It could be a bet with a friend.

A refundable deposit like with have on our challenges – myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting.

A ‘reverse wager’ where you’d end up giving your money to someone you don’t want to have it (pro hunting groups, Donald Trump, etc), like you can do at www.stickk.com.

You get the idea.

An appropriate level of accountability and ‘skin in the game’ on a short to medium term goal.

Will inspire and motivate way more than just those distant long term goals do 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘That’s my goal’ Hall and Matt ‘The Climb’ Nicholson

P.S. 2 bonus ninja points for those middle names 🙂
