The other week I mentioned some of the old sayings my Grandpa (and Nanna) used to use.

Yesterday I was in the queue for the McDonald’s drive through in Salford (if you can get over the shock of this, I’ll cover why tomorrow) when I remembered one my Granny (my Dad’s mum, not my Mum’s mum) used to say.

“Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.”

I nearly put the title of this blog as what filthy Google voice recognition put down when I popped the idea for this blog in my notes.

“Look after the p@nis and the pounds look after themselves”.

Which is very different approach!?!?!

But I thought your spam filter would block it (hence the @ symbol too).

But, no – the pennies.

Just little savings here and there can quickly add up.

And are usually relatively easy to make.

Like some of our food choices can be.

All else being equal, changing from sugar to a sweetener in your cuppa would equate to about 2lbs per year of weight loss per spoon per cup per day.

Two spoons and four cuppas a day equating to a stone of body fat.

A black coffee with no sugar, three times a day would equate to four and half stone lost compared to three lattes.

28 units a week of spirit and low calorie mixer instead of 28 units of beer would be a stone and a half lost.

A tactical swap at each meal that you like just as much, is just as quick, convenient and filling, but is 100 calories less would be over 2 stone lost.

And so on.

Big changes have their place.

Periods of faster progress can be great.

But those little changes that are barely noticeable can really add up.

Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.

Much love,
