I was chatting to Nick, one of our members, the other day.
Nick, for his sins, is a Sheffield Wednesday fan.
Like my wife Alex and her family.
After some big progress in a his first few months, Nick has, by his own admission, lost his mojo recently a bit.
Slipped back a few times.
Then got back to where he was.
A little bit two steps forwards, one step back overall.
He was telling me a that he was losing motivation a bit.
And that he didn’t feel he was getting the results he might like for the effort he was putting in.
That he felt like giving up with it.
A good coach should be able to tweak what they do to be the best approach for the client in front of them.
Whatever the field of coaching.
In our case, a good coach should be able to approach conversations about exercise, nutrition, lifestyle, etc differently dependant on who they’re talking to.
With Nick I decided to go with a football analogy.
But I quite liked it, so am going to share it with you now.
Don’t Give Up on Fitness
I asked him what would happen if he stopped.
“I’d got back to where I was. Regain all the weight and be even more unhappy with things”
“So what we’ve got here is a season or two of being stuck in mid-table” I replied.
“Promotions and championships are nice and we like the idea of working towards them and maybe winning them”
“But if we stop trying, we’ll just get relegated. Repeatedly.”
“A few seasons of being stuck in mid table, rebuilding and working towards future success is better than free falling through the leagues, isn’t it?”
Life is like a sports league.
Season after season.
Some people will be the Man United and Cities (imagine if City had stopped trying in 1998 when relegated to the third tier though).
Some will be the the local pub team.
Like Wednesday, being stuck in the middle of the Championship isn’t quite what we might like.
But it’s better than free-falling through the leagues. Don’t give up on fitness.
Never forget that 🙂
Much love,
Jon ‘The wife was pleased to see this weekend that it is now mathematically impossible for Wednesday to finish above Derby County’ Hall and Matt ‘Only mentions City when they’re doing well’ Nicholson
P.S. If you’re feeling a bit ‘non league’ at the moment and would like to get, at least, to the middle of the Championship, then check the next briefing meeting at RISE in Macclesfield for the next step of what we do.
