Did you know that, if you’re in court, you’re more likely to be found guilty the later in the day it is.

Apart from straight after lunch.

In a study of 1,000 rulings in 2009 by eight judges, found that if your case was heard first thing you had, on average, a 65% chance of a favourable ruling.

This dropped to near zero as the day goes on, jumping back up closer to that 65% after a break, meal or snack.

Columbia University’s Jonathan Levav said: “You are anywhere between two and six times as likely to be released if you’re one of the first three prisoners considered versus the last three prisoners considered.”

Decision fatigue

It’s what’s called decision fatigue.

Decision Fatigue in Weight Loss

As we get progressively more tired and overloaded we revert to the easiest decision.

Whether that be guilty verdict.

Or grabbing that extra slice of cake.

Or getting the take out on the way home.

Or whatever else we do that causes our clothes to ‘shrink’ over time.

And, as always, knowing this is step one.

Waiting and intending to rely on ‘willpower’ is a brave choice.

For both judges and us.

Planning so that we make as many decisions as possible when we’re feeling as good as possible is much more likely to work.

Planning some of the coming week’s meals and doing an online food shop at some point where you’ve got a bit of time and focus.

Making breakfast good and taking lunch with you (or, at least, having a plan of how you will get it easily) means you’re two thirds of the way before your meals before willpower might be an issue.

Just not having things out tempting you when you’re at your most temptable.

Whatever it is for you – don’t rely on willpower.

Make as many of those decisions when you feel good as you can.

And the average of that and those fatigued decisions could be enough to take you in the right direction 🙂

Much love,
