Look, I know I said yesterday’s blog was the last one based on insights from New York.

As Arnie’s character John Matrix says to Sully in the film Commando, before dropping him to his death, “I lied”.

I mentioned that we’d spent a little more in some areas and we originally intended.

And there’s a few times where we essentially just wasted some money.

One time was on the Tuesday night.

Before we went, we had researched some live sport options.

It came down to a choice of baseball, with the New York Mets vs Philadelphia Phillies game starting at $7 a ticket.

Or the NBA finals at two grand each.

We, obviously, went for the baseball.

I’d checked online before and found that public transport ran pretty regularly to Citi Field.

But what I hadn’t fully appreciated was the ticket arrangement.

We got the Metro for a couple of stops and then jumped on a train.

We were in quite a rush and had momentarily lost the girls so we just got on and sat down.

When we got to the other end we realised we hadn’t got any tickets and weren’t sure what the procedure was.

On exiting the station, I asked and was told that procedure was that anyone without a ticket will be charged the maximum fare.

$30 each.

Thankfully the guy only chose to charge for the two adults when he could have charged the same for the three older kids too.

But either way, it was $60 when it would have been $5 each for a single or $7 for a return.

I had two choices at this point.

1. Be annoyed for the rest of the evening

2. Move on instantly

I chose the former.

For a number of reasons.

– It was entirely my own fault and I’d just learned a lesson

– I was actually $90 up on the deal having not been charged for the three older kids

– It was in the past and allowing it to affect the present and future would not get that money back or benefit anyone

– Our children learn how to deal with challenges and setbacks from watching how we do that

If we choose to see it as such, life can be a constant series of frustrations.

If we choose to reframe it, life can be a constant series of learning opportunities, unseen benefits and opportunities for us, and those around us, to grow.

Much love,

Jon ‘not, want not’ Hall

P.S. Changing the conversations in our heads is, from my experience, what changes this old health and fitness journey from being that stop-start, constant slog, to just the way we live our lives. It’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the sound of that!
