When we see a high level athlete, we appreciate that they’ve trained more than we have to get to that level.
Not just in ‘volume’ – the amount of training they’ve done.
But in ‘quality’.
They’ll have been following the very best training methods.
Putting 100% into every bit of their training.
Not just more reps.
More quality reps.
A body builder’s muscles comes from more quality reps.
A footballers skills come from more quality reps.
A marathon runners endurance from more quality reps.
We know this.
We’re aware there’s an element of “natural talent”.
But the biggest difference between our and their ability is the amount of those quality reps they’ve got in.
If we’d have spent tens of thousands of hours doing the kind of training they have, we wouldn’t be quite as good as them, sure.
But we’d be massively along that gap between where we are and where they are now.
And it’s the same with most things we might think we’re less good at.
Or “not cut out for”.
We just haven’t got the quality reps in.
Someone else better at cooking than us?
They’ve got those quality reps in.
Not just going through the motion reps where they cook the same things in the same way over and over.
We’ve tried meditation and got frustrated because our “mind isn’t empty”?
Someone who’s a regular meditator felt the same after a few reps themselves.
But got enough quality reps in till they got better.
Not just a quick go and stopping after 5 minutes.
Quality reps.
Someone who is better at winding down, relaxing and / or dealing with stress may have an element of that naturally, I’m sure.
But they’ve got the reps in.
Thousands and thousands of times where they’ve actively directed their mind one way rather than the other.
The more we ‘train’ our brain to be in the future and past……….
The more we ‘train’ it to be worried and anxious………
The better we’ll get at that.
The more we train it to pull back to the present………
To slow down a little………
To reframe the way we see things………
The better we’ll get at that.
It’s all reps.
Quality reps.
They might start hard and frustrating.
But the get easier.
But only by doing them.
Much love,
