Before every new member starts, we often speak to them on the phone.

A no pressure, no salesy stuff type conversation.

To help them see if the programme, and what we do, is a good fit for them.

——- You can arrange that at www.myrise.co.uk/apply ——-

In that, we talk about what they’ve struggled with before, what they would benefit from help with and what they feel they’d need to know they’d get from us to feel confident the programme would work for them.

“Motivation” is something that’s mentioned a lot.

Something people feel they’re struggling with and / or need help with.

Which we get.

The thing is though………

If you look at the definition, that’s not what we’re struggling with at all.

“a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way”

We have those already.

If I asked you why you might want to make changes to your eating, exercise and / or lifestyle, I’m sure you’d answer pretty quickly.

You’d be able to tell me your “motivations”, no problem.

The problem is that we also have “motivations” for other options too.

Chilling on the sofa.

Binge watching Netflix.

Doing some more work.

Other food choices.

Staying up later.

Having a drink (or ten).

What we’re ‘lacking’ isn’t “motivation”.

It’s “inspiration”.

“the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something”.

It’s the “feeling like it” as opposed to the “reasons for doing it”.

Knowing that doesn’t automatically mean it’ll happen, sure.

But it becomes a different conversation in our heads.

How can we feel that inspiration?

How can we be “mentally stimulated” to do it?

How can we approach it in a way to make it more interesting and enjoyable?

And, usually, the answer lies in just doing it.

Starting uninspired because the doing it usually creates inspiration.

We “feel like” exercising more when we’re exercising.

We “feel like” making better food choices more when we’re making better food choices.

We “feel like” sleeping more when we’re sleeping more.

We “feel like” drinking water more when we’re drinking more water.

We “feel like” drinking less caffeine and / or alcohol more when we’re drinking less caffeine and / or alcohol.

Next time you feel you’re struggling with “motivation”, remember it’s really “inspiration”.

And remember what you were doing last time you felt that inspiration for something.

And go and do that!

Much love,

Jon ‘Inspiral carpet’ Hall
