I’m just going to do one more of my Grandpa’s sayings.
Mainly because I either can’t think of relevant parallels or they’re the same parallels already covered.
I’ll just a list a few other ‘Grandpaisms’ though as they’re still interesting and / or thought provoking:
“One of your better ideas that” (usually said whenever we’d made a meal or restaurant choice that he particularly enjoyed.
“If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well”.
“A stitch in time saves nine.”
“Hard work never killed anyone”.
“People will put on you when they think you are simple!” (I have zero recollection of this one but my mum says he said it a lot and she’d know).
The last one I’m going to draw a parallel from is this:
“Neither a borrower nor a lender be”.
Sage advice in terms of money.
But, perhaps, not so much in terms of our eating.
Because one thing that often holds us back is the feeling that we can’t “borrow” or “loan” our food intake.
We think we need to eat “perfectly” (however we may define that) 21 meals a week.
No snacks, no alcohol, no sugar, etc.
We label foods as “healthy” or “unhealthy”.
And when we can’t do what we’ve decided is “healthy”……….
We feel that we’ve “failed”.
That we should “write it off”.
“Start again next week (or month)”.
When we could actually ‘borrow’ and ‘loan’ across the week.
Not massive loans that we struggle to repay.
But a bit less here and there so we can have more elsewhere.
If we know we’re going to have a calorie heavy weekend, we can ‘save up’ a bit in the days before and / or ‘pay back’ some in the days after.
No big deal.
Strips away the emotion.
Makes those calorie heavier choices just enjoyable.
Rather than part enjoyment and part regret and guilt.

If your intention is (for example) 1,500 calories a day……….
Then 10,500 across the week is usually much more doable than 500 at every meal.
If you ‘borrow’ so much it’s incredibly hard to repay, you might want to question the extent of it.
But a bit here and there, isn’t just fine…………
It’s probably the best way for most.
Much love,
Jon ‘If you’re interested, our youngest son Charlie is named after my Grandpa and Alex’s Grandad’ Hall
P.S. Google says he’d nicked this one from Shakespeare.
